The site chosen for the final project is located at the corner of Cathedral Street and Crown Street. Considering existing context of the site such as residential areas, the Domain, and arterial driving routes of the city I tried to examine and develop the thesis made in the research paper of the previous assignment – The advanced morphogenetic computational design techniques entail an integrated set of design methods, generative and analytical tools and enables an evolutionary design or structural systems towards a highly performative built environment with aesthetically pleasing form.

From the research process, I was inspired by Antoni Gaudi’s catenary arch and his experiment using hanging model which allow him to obtain equilibrated form as well as the beautiful structure. I tried to explore this idea by creating self-supporting/organising voronoi structure. Three-dimensional voronoi structure based on the single polyline or multiple curves in the bouding geometry is ideal to optimise the building space for different activities by easily adjusting the arrangement of the cells for desirable form of the space. The final twelve iterations were chosen considering if they are providing aesthetically pleasing structure as well as the type of possible activities that can be held in such environment. Few different methods were used such as differing arrangement of the voronoi cells, adding curvature or deleting few cells to find the best twelve iterations of the building.

I designed the building as a multi-purpose centre for art, like Pompidou Centre in Paris, where exhibitions, concert, conferences or many other cultural activities can be held to provide an exclamation mark of the area as well as architecturally providing interest to the community. Each voronoi cells with different shapes and sizes facilitate the space for different activities such as art gallery, museum, cinema, and library providing appropriate environment for those activities.

Two entries from the different side of the building lead visitors in to the exhibition area and art gallery on the ground floor. On the first floor and the second floor, the building still consists of the two separated wings, providing the rooms for conferences rooms on one side and library on the other. On the third floor eventually the two spaces meet and create the theatre for performance and the top floor is café with the roof garden taking 360 degree views of the Domain and residential housings on the other side. Overall, the building provides the open and public space that freeform the circulation of the building with different flows of movement according to function of the space.
